The moment the more traditional beauty brands started including mineral cosmetics in their makeup line up you knew mineral makeup was not just a fad, trend or something that will die down but is here to stay.

AC Nielsen reports that in 2005 the sales of mineral makeup in USA amounted to only $5.4 million but it jumped to $149 million in 2007 making up 5% of the total cosmetics sales. This explosion continues and is projected to keep on growing at a phenomenal rate.

I have resisted for sometime before deciding the time was now ripe to feature mineral makeup in one of my segments. Under each heading you will find the answers to everything you always wanted to know about mineral makeup.

What is mineral makeup?
Beauty legend has it that it all started in San Francisco in the 1970s amidst all the ‘peace, love and no war” banners. Mineral makeup is made of finely ground minerals such as titanium, zinc, mica, gold and magnesium, without any of the chemicals, dyes, and preservatives found in traditional makeup.

Please keep in mind traditional makeup always included minerals in their formulations. But they also include fillers, parabens, talc (a mineral,) fragrances, binders, synthetic dyes, and preservatives.

But does "natural," "mineral," and "from the earth" mean better?
Like everything mineral makeup has its fans and critics. Most allergies and intolerances to makeup is a reaction to parabens, talc, fragrances, binders, synthetic dyes, and preservatives. So logic suggests that any makeup that eliminates these should eliminate some of the related problems.

Moreover ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide have anti-inflammatory properties and are common ingredients in traditional sunscreens. Most brands have an in-built sun protection factor of at least SPF15, but I would highly recommend that you still use a traditional sun screen at all times.

Mineral makeup is also generally non-comedogenic, does not clog pores, and should not aggravate an acne condition or cause a flare-up as easily as some traditional makeups can.

So is all Mineral Makeup the same?
‘Mineral’ has become the new ‘Natural’ in marketing strategies for cosmetics. There are no standards or guidelines for labeling “mineral” products. A "mineral makeup" may be all mineral, part mineral - or contain less than 1% mineral as part of the finished formula. Using this logic, practically all makeup could be considered mineral.

The onus sadly always falls onto the consumer, so reading ingredients list is the only way to find out.

Recently there have been concerns about the ingredient bismuth oxychloride in mineral cosmetics (it is known in some cases to be a potential skin irritant.) The issue of irritation has only arisen in the past couple of years with the onslaught of a lot of inferior quality mineral cosmetics flooding the market.

Here I explain what bismuth oxychloride is and why it is used. I want to arm you with the bare facts so you can make the decision when buying your makeup.

What is bismuth oxychloride?
Bismuth oxychloride is a byproduct from the processing of lead and copper. It is an inorganic white pigment, and usually comes in two forms: diamond and pearl finishes. The diamond is shimmery and the pearl is more matte. Its chemical formula is BiOCl.

Is it safe?
Bismuth oxychloride is a product that has been FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) approved for use in products for the face, eyes, lips and nails since 1977. It is a very common and popular ingredient in both traditional and mineral makeup. I

Why is it used?
It gives the makeup a silky feel, good slip (this means it applies well to the skin and doesn't drag or grab on the skin) and good adhesion, which helps it stay on your skin. It feels smooth and silky when rubbed between the fingers. It is often described as a lustrous crystalline powder. It also gives a visible opalescence to makeup; it's good at refracting light and helps to draw attention away from, and camouflage, fine lines, wrinkles and minor discolorations.

So should you buy makeup that contains bismuth oxychloride?
The choice is absolutely yours but with everything you use on your skin you should ALWAYS PATCH TEST. There have been NO CONCLUSIVE tests to prove that bismuth oxychloride is the primary cause of skin irritation.

How to apply mineral powder foundation?
You will need:
• A full brush like a powder brush or a Kabuki Brush
• Mineral Powder Foundation
1. Prep face with moisturiser and primer
2. Face must be dry to touch regardless of what foundation you are using
3. With the lid closed give the powder foundation a good but gentle shake
4. Tap gently on a hard surface and open the lid
5. Use product from the inside of the cap, this way you will only use a little product at a time and won’t have powder flying everywhere
6. Use brush and swirl around the cap, tap excess and apply to face.
7. Dot forehead, cheeks, nose and chin and swirl gently , if you need more follow steps 3-5 again
8. if you need to cover spots etc use a small stiff bush and apply a slightly heavier application to these areas, once done finish with a swirl of the large powder brush

My verdict:
It takes a few seconds to master mineral makeup application (notably the complexion products) but once it is done you will never want anything else on your skin BUT keep in mind - Even when beauty comes from the earth, it's still a case of beauty buyer beware.

My choice picks – I have selected these brands because they only produce mineral makeup rather than deciding to include a line in an existing traditional cosmetic range. They have an amazing colour palette for all skin tones (yes from light to very dark) and have a great range of colour cosmetics to rival traditional cosmetics.

Mineral makeup is the latest addition to an emerging beauty culture dedicated to better living. Unlike traditional products, mineral makeup, which is based on a hypoallergenic loose powder that naturallynourishes the skin, contains no perfumes, talc, alcohol, dyes, mineral oil or preservatives. Not surprisingly, dermatologists are pleased.

We asked two mineral makeup producers — Diane Ranger, who created Colorescience, and Dianne York-Goldman of the La Jolla Spa MD, who created DYG Mineral Makeup — why makeup artists say it's the best kind of makeup for your skin.

Good for sensitive skin. "Lots of women struggle with acne, allergies, dryness and clogged pores from unfriendly commercial makeup," Ranger says. "Mineral makeup lets you enhance skin care with positive beauty choices, not create more problems."

Doesn't feel like a mask. For some women, traditional makeup, often heavier, can feel like a mask. Mineral makeup's texture is lighter and different. Even with more coverage, experts say you'll see a natural, translucent radiance and more of your skin, which can breathe.
Contains ingredients that are good for skin. "For women who can't get to a spa, triple-milled minerals like titanium, gold, zinc, magnesium and aluminum naturally relax, refresh and rejuvenate the skin, and offer a genuine beauty solution in the comfort of home," York-Goldman says.

Does not enhance wrinkles like traditional powders. "If you have fine lines or crow's-feet, traditional makeup can cake in those places, often creating an illusion of deeper lines," York-Goldman notes. "Minerals create real health and aglow like we had in our teens and 20s through essential vitamins, antioxidants and ingredients that actually hydrate the skin and conceal wrinkles."

Helps protect skin from sun. The sun is said to be the number-one aging agent. Mineral makeup's zinc oxide offers natural UVA-UVB protection. "Forty products are now rated [for protection factor], and eventually 95 percent of the line could be rated."

Can be used after peels. Skin procedures such aslasers and peels are common. "Minerals are the natural choice to calm and soothe red, bruised, itchy, inflamed and flaking skin," Ranger says. "This product hides imperfections, then camouflages with minerals that actually block the sun, which is crucial after aggressive treatments. In fact, after certain treatments, you shouldn't use sunscreens. Minerals cool the skin and encourage faster healing," she adds.

You can sleep in it! "I can actually sleep with my makeup on if I need to," York-Goldman points out. "If I have to be up early, I apply it the night before. Plus, I know that if I work out or have a long night, my mineral makeup, which lasts longer than traditional makeup, is absolutely going to be there."

Makes skin look better. The old makeup phrase "putting on your face" may soon be obsolete. "I love when people tell me my skin looks great, because the makeup is obviously invisible," York-Goldman reflects. "It can look and feel like you're wearing nothing at all, like a silky top layer of your very own skin," Ranger adds.

Mineral makeup is the latest trend in cosmetics. It is sold from department store counters, championed on late night infomercials and touted in fashion magazines. How do the various brands differ, and which one is best for you? How does mineral makeup differ from traditional products? Let's take a look.

Despite different brand names and marketing strategies, most mineral makeup has remarkably similar ingredients. Some commonly used minerals include micronized titanium dioxide, micronized zinc oxide, iron oxide, silk mica, and hydrated silica.

Micronized titanium dioxide, a common ingredient in sun block products, is particularly suited to protect skin from damaging sunlight. This white mineral's crystalline structure naturally reflects and defuses the sun's harmful rays. Micronized zinc oxide works in combination with the micronized titanium dioxide to reflect the sunlight's dangerous UVA and UVB rays.

Iron oxide is found in nature in red, orange and yellow hues. These pigments are blended into flesh tones for mineral foundations. Silk mica and hydrated silica soften the mineral compounds for use on the skin. Silk Mica gives mineral makeup a smooth texture, and hydrated silica binds the minerals to make them less messy. Individual brands may add secondary ingredients, such as vitamins, extra skin softeners or stronger pigments to neutralize skin tone.

Mineral makeup can counteract a host of familiar challenges. People prone to allergies or with sensitive skin will find mineral makeup contains no irritating dyes or perfumes. They do not use talc and other fillers that can be harmful to the skin. The acne-prone will find mineral makeup is organic, hypoallergenic and oil free; it will not clog pores like some conventional cosmetics.

Unlike traditional cosmetics, mineral foundations can provide sheer to full coverage. A light, sheer finish can be accomplished by moving the applicator brush in small circles on the face. Mineral makeup can also provide a more opaque texture if applied in layers with a damp sponge, much like you would apply liquid foundation. Fortunately, the consistency of mineral makeup gives coverage without the thick, unnatural, pore-clogging consequences of traditional liquid foundation.

Although mineral makeup has been a fixture in high-end department stores and specialty cosmetics shops for several years, a handful of more economical options are now on the market in drugstores. Consumers can expect to pay $25 for upscale mineral makeup brands, while drugstore mineral makeup from Neutrogena and Physician's Formula range from $9-$12.

With so little variation in actual ingredients, the difference in brands is often limited to marketing strategy. Many brands cater to a specific skin type. For example, Mineralogie claims their mineral makeup is suited to those with oily skin, because it does not include minerals that give other brands a shimmery finish.

Automated beauty tools are beginning to make the days of applying makeup or washing your face by hand look quaint.

Professional-level devices are now available for use at home as manufacturers refine their products -- and their sales pitches -- to reach the large consumer market. The sometimes-pricey devices are more available than ever as spas, doctors' offices, websites and infomercials sell them with celebrities and others touting their effectiveness. And with many devices now in their second or third incarnations, manufacturers may be approaching the right combination of price and performance, erasing the memories of gimmicks gone bad. Consumers now can laser away hair, treat acne, reduce uneven pigmentation, airbrush on cosmetics and cleanse skin, as well as (or better than) a professional.

These new beauty power tools are part of a growing trend for at-home spa treatments that can replace or complement professional services, said Michael Moretti, editor of the Medical Insight Report, which covers the aesthetic medical industry. His recent report on home-use devices profiled 26 companies that make consumer versions of professional products, a market that he projected will grow about 25% annually for several years to come.

As with cameras or cookware, the target market is the "prosumer" who craves the pro's tricks and tips but is hoping for little pain to the body, wallet or ego. After all, how are you going to feel if you spend $270 on the no!no! 8800 device to zap body hair with patented heat waves if it doesn't work? (It does, and it can keep hair from growing back, but you've got to tolerate the scent of burning hair and, most important, follow the directions.)

The at-home products are "more compact and won't do the same job as a physician- utilized machine, but over time, they get great results," said Cindy Vandruff, editor in chief of Aesthetic Trends & Technologies, a journal for physicians and aestheticians.

Cosmetic companies are hopping on the bandwagon. Neutrogena recently launched the new two-speed Wave Duo Power-Cleanser with Foaming Pads. The buzzing, $14.99 palm-sized plastic device comes with single-use foaming pads and the required AA battery. Vibrating mascaras by Maybelline and Lancome promise to mimic the delicate wiggle a makeup artist uses to build color on the lashes. Garnier's $16.99 Ultra-Lift Pro Deep Wrinkle Roller puts ingredients such as Vitamin A in a roll-on dispenser that promises to firm and lift skin on the neck and face.

Skin care may have led the revolution in gadgetry, but color cosmetics are following up with technical innovations too. This fall, about 100 Sephora stores launched the $225 Temptu Airbrush Makeup System, designed to mist skin with an atomized foundation that looks slightly more dewy than most professional-level airbrushed makeup. Temptu Chief Executive Michael Benjamin says the company is developing an entire range of cosmetics or beauty products that could be airbrushed -- including sunscreen.

Though Temptu has long sold a professional airbrush, the new at-home model allows users to switch easily between colors of foundation, blush or highlighter without cleaning the spray head. Makeup artist Gina Brooke says she sometimes prefers the smaller, lighter consumer Temptu system to apply makeup, or on location. Brooke said she also likes how the light mist can create a smooth complexion that can stand up to high-definition scrutiny. Lancome followed up its much-hyped $34 to $39 vibrating mascaras with a $48 buzzing powder puff, the new Oscillation Powerfoundation mineral makeup. It features a motorized, cushioned applicator that the company says delivers 7,000 vibrations a minute to wiggle micronized powder foundation smoothly across skin. Yet the item, which looks like a child's top, relies on smooth human-powered strokes, not vibrations, to achieve a fine finish.

The old adage you get what you pay for proves true with many of these buzzing beauty products. Before buying, shoppers should investigate the manufacturer's history and even check out Internet buzz, said Dr. Tina Alster, a clinical professor of dermatology at the Georgetown University Medical Center.

"Any of these at-home devices are a lot more cost-effective, and certainly they are more convenient [than professional treatments]," Alster said. "This is a huge trend. We are just at the tip of what will become widely available and widely used," she said.

Alster is a fan of the Clarisonic skin-care brush and recommends the $149 to $225 devices for patients who have clogged pores, oily skin or whiteheads, or who are acne prone. Spas and doctors' offices, including hers, are using the brushes to quickly remove surface dead skin for better product absorption, makeup removal or skin smoothing. The company recently launched a version that is designed to scrub your body. Alster also recommends the brushes for anyone who uses glycolic acid, retinols or Vitamin C products.

Like a power toothbrush for your face, the Clarisonic bristles move a few millimeters, 300 times a second in an oscillatory fashion, said Dr. Robb Akridge, co-founder and vice president of clinical affairs at manufacturer Pacific Bioscience Laboratories Inc., in Bellevue, Wash. And the message seems to be getting through: Sales have increased 2,179% in three years.

Not all consumer versions of professional devices get the thumbs up, however. Alster and Veronica Barton-Schwartz, who runs a spa in Malibu, gave tepid reviews of the micro-current devices that aim to firm facial muscles with electric stimulation.

Yet aestheticians have been using micro-current technology since the 1970s, according to Carol Cole, whose namesake company has been selling her NuFace hand-held micro-current device for four years. Though some experts debate the usefulness of micro-current, at-home devices can offer a cost savings. Cole said professional micro-current treatments can cost $120 to $400 a session, and an effective regimen requires 12 to 18 twice-a-week sessions. Her device sells for $325.

Naturally, even with DVDs, charts and guides to using the products, someone will probably airbrush their sinuses in medium beige. Alster and others urge consumers to research all claims and, please, read the instructions.

Foiling loose powder eye makeup brings out the bold rich tones seen in the eye shadow container. In mineral makeup eye shadows, foiling enriches each color for a more dramatic effect as well as extending longevity. Mineral powder eye liners are always applied using the foil method.

Foiling, in makeup artist terms, simply means to blend a cosmetic mixing medium or water with the makeup powder for a paste consistency then apply with makeup applicator or brush to designated areas.

Steps to prepare mineral loose powder eye shadow into paste are as follows:

1. Find a small clean cosmetic container for mixing the loose powder product. The sifter jars lids that most mineral makeup brands use are perfect for foiling.
2. Tap a small amount of loose mineral powder or other eye shadow powder into the mixing tray or lid.
3. Add a small pin head size drop of mixing medium or water into the mixing container with the loose powder.
4. With a firm makeup applicator or brush, stir mixing medium and mineral eye shadow powder together until a firm paste is formed. If an excessive amount of mixing medium was used, the formulation will appear more liquid, than paste. In this case add additional amounts of loose powder until desired consistency is achieved.

To aid my appreciation of Jimbaran Spa’s heritage, it was recommended that I try an “Ocean Ritual” treatment. My therapist, Aryani, guided me into a rustic spa suite in soft Mediterranean hues with a double massage bed and private Swiss shower. A glass sliding door opens into a private garden with outdoor rinse shower shielded by a gigantic leafy plant and an enormous bathtub. The treatment commenced with a 50-minute traditional Balinese massage using Bali Santi Oil (coconut base oil infused with citrus, nutmeg, vetiver and patchouli essential oils). Under Aryanti’s skillful hands, I could feel all tension released with the soothing touch. A Blue Sea Salt was then scrubbed onto my entire body to exfoliate the skin in preparation for the seaweed body wrap. A paste made of seaweed powder and water was generously applied on my skin using effleurage movements, ending with an aroma mist spray to keep the body moist. I was then wrapped in layers of foil and blanket to facilitate the seaweed’s task of detoxification and water retention removal. I enjoyed a therapeutic scalp and face massage while under “wrap” in the nice and warm cocoon and almost drifted into nirvana. Aryanti gently nudged me when it was time to remove the seaweed gel. I was guided to shower at the private garden courtyard, amongst the lush greens where water cascaded from an Indonesian clay vase. After the shower, I immersed myself in a warm bath with bath salt and ocean oil (coconut base with citrus and vanilla essential oils), sipping cold “coconilla” (a specially formulated spa drink infusion of coconut milk, young coconut juice, vanilla stick and a dash of sugar). Before I got dressed, Aryani smoothed a blend of aloe vera lotion with ocean oil onto my skin. The result was aromatic and silky soft skin all round. The “Ocean Ritual” did wonders to my dull and lifeless skin!

The black and blue are not within the natural color scheme. A pinch will give you a soft tone naturally. Apply colorete in apples of the cheeks. I sometimes step a little powder or bronzer colorete in areas of my face where it could be tanned. Again, this provides a natural gloss. Simply you must be careful not to apply too. It is not advisable to look as though you'd burned sunbathing.

The natural eye makeup is simple. Use neutral tones. The colors such as gray brown, brown, peach and mauve give freshness. These neutral colors will allow your natural shine factions complementing the iris. When I apply makeup naturally, I remain within the same family of colors for eyes, cheeks and lips. Use your natural brilliance as a guide for choosing colors. As I have a naturally rosy cheeks and lips the same color, use a shade of mauve clear, and a bright pink colorete transparently with a tint of pink. The colors do not compete with each other and are not the most important part of my face. By contrast, the brightness is the most fresh highlights in my face.

A clearly delineate powder can be applied to make the lashes look thicker, as in days of our youth. Probably notes that the drafting is not necessary.

Riza eyelashes and apply a mask or brown transparent to add length. The brown is a natural color that will not look exaggerated, but only lengthen the tabs and fill areas that seem a little spaced.
